Summer 2017 Part 1  Week 3

Stoke to Shady Oak Tarporley

Harecastle Tunnel S Portal

Between Stoke and Kidsgrove is the 2919yard long Harecastle tunnel. The tunnel was built without ventilation shafts so it is ventilated by a "roots blower" mounted over the South end portal of the tunnel and pushing air the full length of the tunnel. There are doors closing off the south end to force the air north. So after entering the tunnel the doors are closed and the light at the end of the tunnel diasappears.

Shortly after emerging from the tunnel we pass the junction where the Macclesfield Canal (technically its the Hardingswood branch of the T&M which then forms an end on junction with the Macclesfield) which runs to Marple. The branch runs parallel with the T&M which now starts its long descent across the Cheshire plane, after two locks the branch crosses overhead on Poole Lane aquaduct and heads off East towards Macclesfield.

WheelockThe traffic to Stoke on Trent was once so busy that the locks on this stretch (except Pierpoint locks) were doubled, with two single locks operating side by side. Some of the double locks have been closed over the years but recently a campaign by the Cheshire Locks Project has helped to reopen some and they are planning to reopen more over time. This is the infamous Heartbreak Hill.

Wheelock WharfThe Last Flight takes its name from the town of Wheelock where there are a number of restaurants and pubs and some good moorings.
